PM Motor without Rare Earth Materials
UQM scientific technology company recently developed a permanent magnet motor without using rare earth magnetic materials. This motor mainly designed for EV and HEV. It is also applied for a patent named “brushless PM machine construction enabling low coercivity magnets”.
Since the motor magnets that made of rare earths have high corecivity, the electric motor of most EV and HEV in the market are permanent magnetic motor which of rare earths. The word corecivity is to describe the ability of resistance to demagnetization. And this time, the PM motor without rare earths designed by UQM was consists of AlNiCo and FeCoW, which make the motor has lower corecivity.
The new motor utilized a innovative geometric method, which can achieve higher magnetic flux destiny than old motor. And the low coercivity is also acceptable at the summit of magnetic flux destiny.
UMQ also showed that the new permanent magnetic motor provided a practicable plan based on our present technology of rare earths. Therefore, it can reduce the cost of rare earths. However, now we are still at the period of prototype designing, and if the test result of the first sample can meet our expectation, our program can get into next stage.
