Recently, UQM Technology Company declares that it launches a kind of permanent magnet motors without rare earth magnet . The motors are mainly designed and developed for electric cars and hybrid electric vehicles. Meanwhile, UQM Technology Company has been awarded a U.S patent of which number is 8928198 for the motors. This patent is called “Brushless PM Machine Construction Enabling Low Coercivity Magnets”. Also, the patent describes the geometrical shape of the magnet in the motor and introduces its manufacturing method.

Because magnets made of rare earth magnetic materials have high coercive force, currently many electric cars and hybrid electric vehicles use permanent magnet motors made of rare earth materials. UQM Technology Company promotes the permanent magnets motors without rare earth adopting magnetic materials, such as AlNiCo magnets or FeCoW, which enable the motors to acquire lower coercive force.

Comparing with the current designs, M Company indicates that permanent magnetic motors without rare earth have similar performances. Therefore, as long as it finishes development of the new motors, UQM can possibly chooses the best plan of magnets according cost of magnets.

As the description of the patent abovementioned, the brand new permanent magnetic motors without rare earth use a special kind of geometrical structure, which can realize higher magnetic flux density, comparing with other existing permanent magnetic motors. It is acceptable that the motors use magnetic materials with low coercive force.
