The First Permanent Magnet High-speed Rail Came off the Assembling Line

A new generation of high-speed train permanent magnet synchronous traction system recently has passed the road test of national rail test center. A reporter of Everyday Economic News in Zhuzhou Institute learns that the high-speed rare earth magnet traction system now has come off the assembling line and will enter the testing period, which may possibly come into commercial operation in 3 years.


















It is understood that as traction system technology is the core technology of engine, the breakthrough that permanent magnet technology can be applied to domestic high-speed rail power makes China much more competitive in the world stage.

As important basic materials supporting modern electric information industry, neodymium iron boron magnets are widely applied to many fields, ranging from watches and cameras to automobiles, generators, medical instruments and inverter air-conditioners. In capital market, stocks of magnet become popular again. However, NdFeB magnets were not applied to rail traffic system until 2011 when PM synchronous tractions were first installed in the 20th train of Shenyang subway.

Commonly, energy consumption of traction covers about 40%--50% of the whole rail traffic system. According to the measurement of Shenyang Subway, permanent magnet synchronous system can save energy, which is 9.61% more than that of asynchronous motors. It is measured that new line operation will save 192 million every year if the 96 traffic lines all adopt permanent magnet synchronous traction system in 2015.

Insiders believe that development of new generation of traction system is a revolutionary breakthrough of traffic traction technology and its commercial prospect also attracts much attention.

In Germany, Japanese, France and so on, neodymium magnet synchronous traction system has been applied to high-speed trains, metro vehicles, low floor vehicles and monorail vehicle, which has finished the development of samples and test of actual lines.

Although China has a late start on developing rail traffic, it has caught up with advanced level of foreign countries. Rare earth magnet high-speed trains now have come off the assembling line, which marks that China becomes a master of PM traction system among the few countries in the world.
