China Motor Company successfully developed Hong Kong trams permanent magnet traction system 

Recently, China's motor company developed permanent magnets traction system for Hong Kong trams approved by Beijing Jiaotong University, Southwest Jiaotong University and China trolley car experts and relevant units and Hong Kong Trams Company. It is concluded that the system design achieved the advanced level of domestic electricity transmission system, ready for loading conditions.

In 2008, China's motor company according to the requirement of the Hong Kong trams company, designed the asynchronous communication electric drive system, optimized the system volume, traction and easy to maintain at the same time, greatly enhanced the reliability of the system. The first ac asynchronous electric drive system loaded in April 2009. It also opens the electricity transmission system upgrade of "one-hundred ding-ding car" completely for the first time.

From the beginning of 2015, China motor company developed more energy efficient ac permanent magnet electric drive system for Hong Kong trams. Only a few companies such as France's ALSTOM have mass application experience on PM traction technology, while the domestic traction permanent magnet synchronous motor and PM electric drive system are still in starting stage. The permanent magnet traction system applied in the field of rail cars in the city is still vacant.

Hong Kong trams permanent magnet electric drive system is China Motor company's another new product development in the field of rail cars after mastering the permanent magnetic control technology such as electric vehicles, Marine propulsion systems and so on. At present, the system has completed the prototype test, type test, ground joint debugging and through experts' review, will proceed with loading operation test.

It is introduced that permanent magnet motor is featured in small volume, light weight and high efficiency. Under the same operating conditions, the PM traction system save energy more than 20% compared with asynchronous traction system, and ascend along with the ascension of the regenerative braking performance. To calculate Hong Kong trams run ten hours a day, about 120 kilometers, the annual power consumption for using asynchronous traction system is 50000 degrees, while the permanent magnetic assembly traction system can save powder 9000 degrees at least each year.

Milling Principle 
Magnetic powder is constituted by lots of basic neodymium iron boron particles and the gaps between particles. Powder is material between solid and colloid. Solid material, under 0.1μm is called colloid, while ones, exceeding 1μm are dense body or solid. There are many poles between neodymium magnet powders with small connecting surface, so, unlike dense bodies, powder does not have fixed shape, which is similar to fluidity of the fluid. In dense bodies, there are no macro pores, so it is bound by atoms.

Commonly, powder metallurgical process is adopted in rare earth permanent magnet alloy preparation process. NdFeB magnetic powder is classified into coarse, medium and fine process technology, granularity is require to be between 3-5μm. Neodymium rare earth magnets are easy to oxidize and these oxide powder spontaneously combusts in the air. With the interaction between magnetism, powder become secondary particles, the group of thousands of particles formed by the interaction between Van der Waal force, London force and magnetism. So, powder of rare earth permanent magnetic alloys has poor fluidity, which increases difficulties to the next step, magnetic field orientation.

Requirement of Neodymium Magnetic Powder Particle
Granularity of strong neodymium magnetic powder should be measured by particle size measurement instrument. The sizes of magnetic powder particle are 3-5μm. Distribution of magnetic particles should be also measured by particle size measurement. Particles of sizes of 3-5μm should cover 80%-90%. Particles with size under 1μm should be less than 15% during production. Particles with sizes bigger than 5μm should be as less as possible. When powder is made by jet mill, it should be smaller than 50ppm.

The powder particles should be like ball or similar to ball. Crystal imperfection should be as less as possible. The above all requirements are basic for sintered neodymium permanent magnets .

Global Rare Earth Permanent Magnet Industry Transfers to China 

From the 21st century, it is hard for developed countries to continue rare earth permanent magnets production because of high raw material cost and decreased market price, so western developed countries, represented by USA and European countries, adjust their industrial construction.

NdFeB magnets industry in USA has turned the past glory into decline now. Crucible and Ugimag closed, while Magnequench moved to China. VAC in Germany purchased and merged Neorem in Finland in 2007 and now this is the only one sintered neodymium magnet manufacturer in Europe. There are three main neodymium permanent magnet manufacturers, including Neomax, the biggest one in the world, TDK, an old manufacturer of magnetic materials and Shin-Etsu Chemical. Besides in Europe and Japan, the other sintered neodymium rare earth magnet manufacturers are all in China. Neomax, TDK and Neorem have built post-processed bases in China, while VAC and China manufacturer set up joint enterprise of sintered NdFeB magnets.

In the aspect of bonded neodymium magnets, most manufacture capacity concentrated in Southeast Asia. Japan Dado and China manufacturers cover 90% of the market share of spindle motor of hard drive.

Currently, developed countries’ neodymium iron boron industry has all transfer to China. In 2010, the production capacity of sintered NdFeB in Japan is only 19 thousand tons and 1200 tons in Europe. Production yield of sintered NdFeB permanent magnetic material remains low in foreign countries.
