Toshiba Developed New Rare Earth Permanent Magnets for Engine 20161119

According to Nihon Keizai Shimbun, the greatest electronics enterprise of Japan, Toshiba, announced recently that they have developed a new SmCo magnets without rare earth elements which used for engine. This magnet is mainly applied to Blade Electric Vehicles, industrial engine and wind turbines to decrease the demand of rare earths and also keep the performance as before.

It is reported that the magnetism of the new magnets can surpass the neodymium magnets, which is the strongest rare earth permanent magnets  in the world. Even in 180 degree high temperature, the magnetism will not decrease. Nowadays, it is used to replace the neodymium NdFeB magnets to meets the demand in some fields. Compared with the rare earth element Dy in neodymium that come from China mostly, the Sm element in SmCo magnets  is abundant in America and Australia, thus can be purchased steadily and conveniently. The experts said that with the strained Sino-Japanese relations, the prices of rare earths increase sharply for the export limitation of China, thus lead to a higher supply risk and production cost. Therefore, the enterprises are looking for new products to replace neodymium permanent magnets all the time.

Although Toshiba developed strong SmCo magnets in 2012, the magnetism will decrease or even lose once the temperature surpasses 140 degree. Therefore, it is not adopted by manufacturers. To this problem, the new technology of Toshiba is to improve the heat-resistant quality through heat treatment to ensure the magnets can be used in the engine.

At this moment, the permanent magnet is still in the stage of trail order, and they hope to achieve mass production as early as possible.
