The scientists attached two finger-shaped neodymium ring magnets at the end of biliary tract and intestinal tract respectively and then the two ends sutured automatically and seamlessly by magnetism, thus to simplify the whole complex operation process under laparoscope. And after a few days, the permanent magnets will be out of body smoothly. This advanced technology, named Magnetic Compression Anastomosis (MCA), which lead by the professor of Xi’an Jiaotong University surprised everyone in the Sino-American Health Summit.
The research team showed that they have finished more than 50 surgeries successfully with this technology and shorten the operation time of 3/4 compared with traditional suture. What’s more, besides hepatobiliary problems, MCA technology also used for operations of many other diseases, for example, the esophageal and vascular anastomosis and aquadissection. With this technology, the patients can be cured quickly and painlessly.
According to the introduction, the research team has studied the application of neodymium permanent magnets in the magnetic anastomosis of medical operation since 2003, and now has successfully implemented a number of surgical clinical applications and has been authorized 9 patents. Since the shape of magnets in the market is hard to meet the requirement, they always grind them into powder by ball grinder and then reshape them to wanted type. And the magnets are easy to oxide, so they coated them with titanium alloy. Their original work makes our magnetic anastomosis technique turn to the international leading level.
With the support of The National Natural Science Foundation of China and almost 14 years’ research experiences of neodymium magnets in medical science, the research team builds an entirely new field—Magnetic Surgery. They said they will do further study and clinical trail for permanent magnetic materials in the future and try their best to make the patient benefit.
