At 8:16, 21st July, 1969, Neil Armstrong, the American astronaut, set foot on the moon and left behind the first human footprint, which is the famous “one giant leap of mankind”.

Today, we would like to introduce the pair of shoes. Due to the special inner design and technological material, we feel like walking on the moon after putting them on.

It is nothing special, looking like common skateboard shoes or platform shoes, which once were popular. The shoes are developed by a research team in New York, United State, with a special name, “20:16 Moonwalker”. 20:16 was the time when Neil Armstrong landed on the moon. According to the designers, you feel lighter, even weightless after you put them. In fact, the feel should be “stepping on the air”. The secret comes from the midsole. It is place two layers of N45 neodymium permanent magnets according to human’s foot type, with the same poles opposite to each other.

We all know that the principle that the opposite pole attract, but like poles repel, so they produce force and counter force through their reaction, which give you the upward pushing force. Therefore, you will feel like walking on the moon.

The principle is quite simple. N45 neodymium magnet , a kind of strong permanent magnet, are very commonly used in energy, transportation, medical, electric household appliance and toys. Of course, in order to reduce the weight and guarantee the feeling of walking on the air, designers make great effort to thickness, weight, shape and arrangement.

The magnets are in different sizes, whose diameters are from 2.5 millimeters to 5 millimeters. The biggest magnet groups can produce force of 12 kilograms. Although the shoes have no limitation of weight, but the designers informs that according to the force of the magnets, weight less than 130 kilograms is better. Fortunately, there are not many people overweight.

In order to increasing the feel, “walking on the air”, the designers also use soft memory foam above and under the permanent magnets . The shoe sole is made of soft rubber, while the shoe liner is made of synthetic polyethylene. All in all, the designers’ goal is to restore the feeling of walking on the moon.
