Volvo has been paying attention to the development of self-driving cars, however, they’ve made new progresses recently, namely ties the cars to the road using permanent magnets . For the self-driving cars, the most important part is if people can drive with them safely on the road.
There are two ways: GPS and the camera. The former one is limited by the place and the later one is limited by the visibility. Therefore, Volvo comes up with the idea of laying a track using magnets on the road to help define the road range for the cars.
The researchers say that the advantage of the permanent magnet track is that it is relatively cheaper and will not cause great effect on the current infrastructure, besides, magnets work in any bad weathers and this kind of stability is what the self-driving cars need.
It is said that Sweden is interested in the magnet road plan and the officials in the traffic administrative department say that the large-scale spread of the magnet road will be one of the top technology of Sweden.
