New Cost-effective Permanent Magnetic Materials Lower Cost

It is reported by Electric Car Era that it is true that there is no other productive force more important than science and technology. Recently, researchers from Ames Laboratory of United States Department of Energy develop a new type of magnetic materials, which can be applied to motors of electric vehicles and wind turbines. The new materials can take place of dysprosium that is expensive, of which magnetic performance is more excellent and cost is cheaper.

The new type permanent magnet materials are made of NdFeB composed by neodymium, iron and boron and cerium and cobalt. Comparing with traditional dysprosium produced by sintering, costs of cerium and cobalt are much lower, but their magnetic performance is as remarkable as that of neodymium magnet.

It is understood that NdFeB magnets which are added with cerium and cobalt still manifests nice magnetic property under high temperature. Also, its intrinsic coercive force can reach T≥ 435K, which approximately equals to 180 Celsius degree.

Arjun Pathak from Ames Laboratory and Mahmud Khan from the University of Miami conducted a series of experiments and found that under high temperature coercive force, referring to ability resisting to demagnetization, of magnetic material with cerium in it are superior to magnetic material containing dysprosium. In addition, the price is 20%-40% cheaper than that of the latter.

Before researchers have tried to use cerium in rare earth permanent magnet materials, but the experiments were all failed. Researcher now indicates it is because Curie temperature, which is also called Curie point, has been lower. But later the research team found out that magnetic materials will not lose magnetism with cobalt and cerium replacing dysprosium.

So far, dysprosium needed by manufacturing industry far exceeds the resource that are developed and recycled. In order to reduce dependence on dysprosium, searching substitute materials is the critical point. Cerium and cobalt will be more applied with lower cost and richer resource.
