Samarium cobalt magnets 2:17, also called Sm2Co17 magnets, are made of samarium, cobalt, copper, iron and zirconium in a certain mixing ratio, and through melting, smashing, pressing and sintering, becomes magnetic material. The maximum energy product of each grade is between 20-32MGOe. It max working temperature can reach 350°C. Due to low temperature coefficient and excellent corrosion resistance, its performance is better than that of neodymium permanent magnets under high temperature. It is widely applied to aerospace and aviation, military, high-temperature motor, car sensor, various kinds of magnetic transmission, magnetic pump and micro-wave components.

Because Sm2Co17 magnet is brittle, it is uneasy to be made into complicate shapes or thin sheet or ring. Also, it is easy to be chipped off, when it is processed, tested or magnetized. China Rare Earth Magnet Limited thinks as long as the damaged does not influenced magnetic performance or functions, it should be qualified products. In addition, users should be careful when they assemble the permanent magnet , avoiding absorption between two magnets or between magnets and iron material, which may cause magnet breaking. Sm2Co17 magnets are not easy to be fully magnetized. If users magnetize the magnets by themselves, they should fully understand how much the magnetic field of magnetization machine and choose suitable grade.

Samarium-cobalt magnet is also called SmCo magnet, SmCo permanent magnet, rare earth cobalt permanent magnet and so on. It is mixed by ratio with Sm, and cobalt and other rare earth metal material, smelted into alloy, and then be crushed, compressed and sintered into shapes. SmCo magnets has high magnetic energy product, and very low temperature coefficient; its highest operating temperature can be up to 350 ℃, negative temperature unlimited. When the operating temperature reaches 180 ℃, its maximum magnetic energy product, the temperature and chemical stability can exceed neodymium magnets.

Helpful hints
(1) Sintered samarium cobalt permanent magnetic material is brittle, and is not suitable to be made into structure parts due to its lack of ductility. Mechanical and physical properties of SmCo5 magnet are better than Sm2Co17, so SmCo5 is easier to produce while Sm2Co17 is more brittle. Magnetized samarium cobalt permanent magnet must be careful handled one by one in assembling process, so as not to be broken when attracts to iron parts, and harm human body in the case of two pieces of magnets attract to each other.
(2) Due to minor collisions during the process of packing and shipping, there will be small visible defects. As long as it doesn't affect the conventional assembling or functioning, the magnetic properties, stability and resistance to demagnetization will not be changed.
(3) Customers who need the SmCo magnets to be supplied in un-magnetized condition shall have clear knowledge of the magnetic energy of their own magnetizing device to select the grade of SmCo magnets of China Rare Earth Magnet Limited that can be magnetized thoroughly.

SmCo1:5 VS Sm2Co17 Magnets 

SmCo1:5 magnets are called SmCo5 magnets as well. It is a kind of China rare earth magnet material which is made by a ratio of Samarium, Cobalt or a part of praseodymium replaces Samarium by process of melting, crushing, molding and sintering. The range of maximum magnetic energy is 16 to 25MGOe and the maximum operating temperature is 250 ℃. Its maximum magnetic energy is lower than that of Sm2Co17 permanent magnets . However, their mechanical property and ductility is better than that of Sm2Co17 magnets. They are easier in machining and less brittle in using. Herewith, Samarium cobalt magnets 1:5 are more suitable to be produced into the shapes which can’t be made by China Sm2Co17 material. For example, ultra thin disc, rectangle, ring and various complicated shapes.

Furthermore, the magnetic fields of magnetizing of SmCo5 can be smaller than that of 2:17 Samarium cobalt magnets. Generally, a magnetic field of 40,000 Gs is enough for saturation magnetization, while 60,000 GS or higher magnetic field is required for 2:17 SmCo magnets . Rare earth elements in 1:5 Samarium cobalt magnets formula is as high as 40%, so its price is much higher than Sm2Co17.

The users can choose SmCo5 or Sm2Co17 rare earth permanent magnets reasonably according to their own usage conditions.
